Gov. Shumlin appoints student Lachlan Francis to the Board of Education

MONTPELIER – Gov. Peter Shumlin announced the appointment of Brattleboro Union High School student Lachlan Francis to the Vermont Board of Education. Francis lives in Putney.

Francis, a junior at BUHS, has been active in sports and civic organizations in school. In addition, he has worked as a farm hand and a camp counselor, and traveled to Cuba. He will serve as a non-voting member this year, and become a voting member during his second year on the board.

“It’s a great honor to be appointed, and I’m excited to serve all students across the state. Education is the bridge to a brighter future, and the boards role is to ensure that all Vermonters can shape their own destiny,” Francis said. “If there is one issue that I’m most focused on, it is expanding college course offerings and financial assistance for such courses in high schools around the state.”

Gov. Shumlin said there was broad interest in the seat from high school students across the state, and the candidates were strong. He said Francis will ensure the student perspective is reflected in educational decisions made by the board.

Francis attended his first board meeting in August.
